👸 ONE LAST DANCE FOR THE DANCING QUEEN: CELEBRATING 31 YEARS OF DONATA HEPPNER'S LEGACY 🐴

Some people leave a position. Others leave a legacy. Cicero District 99 is celebrating the retirement of a woman who leaves behind something far greater than a title.

For 31 years, Donata Heppner has dedicated her life to the students, staff, and families of District 99. For more than three decades, she has led with strength, compassion, integrity, and an unwavering belief that every child deserves someone who believes in them.

Her journey began in 1995 at Cicero School as a junior high math teacher. While she taught numbers and equations, she was also teaching life lessons — hard work, perseverance, accountability, and confidence. It didn't take long for others to recognize her leadership, and she soon became a Dean and Assistant Principal, helping guide students through some of the most important years of their lives.

Then came one of the most significant chapters in District 99 history.

Donata helped open Unity Junior High School, which at the time was the third-largest junior high school in the country. As Assistant Principal and later Principal, she helped build more than a school. She helped build a community. Thousands of students walked through those doors, and because of her leadership, they found a place where they could learn, grow, and succeed.

For the final decade of her remarkable career, she served as Principal of Columbus East, where she continued doing what she has always done best — putting students first.

Ask anyone in District 99 about Donata Heppner, and you'll hear words like dedicated, compassionate, tireless, and inspiring. Ask Superintendent Dr. Aldo Calderin, and he'll tell you what so many already know:

She is the model principal. The standard. The example. The one others look to when they want to understand what educational leadership should look like.

And on her final day, the Colts made sure she felt every ounce of the love and appreciation she spent 31 years giving to others.

The hallways were filled from wall to wall. Students and staff lined every corridor holding signs, balloons, and streamers. The cheers were deafening. The applause was endless. Every step she took was met with gratitude. Every turn brought another reminder of the countless lives she touched.

And then came the moment that no one will ever forget. The entire school gathered in the gymnasium. The choir stood ready. The band prepared to play. And waiting among the crowd was another surprise — her family, there to celebrate the incredible woman they have shared with District 99 for more than three decades.

As emotions filled the room, the choir performed "My Way." Could there have been a more fitting song? Because Donata Heppner never followed the easiest path. She followed the right one. Every single time.

Then the band played her favorite song, "Dancing Queen," bringing smiles through tears and reminding everyone that even in farewell, they was joy to be found.

In that moment, surrounded by students, staff, colleagues, friends, and family, it became clear that this was not simply a retirement celebration. It was the celebration of a life's work.

A legacy measured not in years served, but in lives changed. Thirty-one years. Thousands of students. Hundreds of educators. Countless memories. Countless lessons. Countless acts of kindness.

The impact of a great principal cannot be measured by test scores, awards, or titles alone. It is measured by the confidence she gives a struggling student. The support she provides a teacher. The culture she creates inside a building. The belief she inspires in an entire community. That is Donata Heppner's legacy.

Long after the final bell rings. Long after the decorations are put away. Long after this becomes a memory. Her fingerprints will remain on every school she served, every educator she mentored, and every student whose life was made better because she cared.

And perhaps the greatest measure of her impact is that her worlds will continue to echo through the halls of Columbus East long after she is gone:

"We Won't Quit. We Have Grit. We Are Colts."

Those weren't just words. They were a promise. A culture. A way of life. And because of Donata Heppner, generations of Colts will continue carrying that message forward.

Congratulations on your retirement, Donata. Thank you for 31 extraordinary years. Thank you for your leadership. Thank you for your heart. Thank you for showing all of us what excellence looks like.

Cicero District 99 is better because you were here. The Colts are stronger because you led them. And while your chapter as principal may be ending, your legacy will continue to inspire for generations to come.

Once a Colt. Always a Colt. Once a principal. Forever a legend.
